Breast Lift

Breast lifts are often performed for women that have lost the firm appearance of their breasts with age or after pregnancy. The cosmetic procedure creates a firmer and more uplifted look and feel. The position of the areolas and nipples will become enhanced and pleasing to the eye. Candidates for a breast lift surgery may have breasts that lack substance or firmness, nipples and areolas that point downward, or breasts that are pendulous. Some women will choose to combine another breast surgery with breast lift, such as a breast enhancement or reduction.

Breast lifts can give a more youthful appearance to an individual. It is a good idea to be as clear as possible with the plastic surgeon about the goals of the breast lift. The plastic surgeon will ask what your desired breast shape and size is and will discuss the repositioning of your nipples and areolas. It is best to be at an ideal weight prior to the breast lift.

Depending on the goals of the patient will help the surgeon determine what breast lift technique to use. Commonly, the breast lift method will involve three separate incisions. An incision is made around the areola, another vertical incision runs from the bottom edge of the areola to the crease under the breast, and the third incision is horizontal from beneath the breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease. Individual factors will affect how the breast lift turns out.

The breast lift surgeon will remove the excess breast skin and shift the nipple and areola to a higher position. The areola can be reduced in size if the patient desires. The skin that had been located above the areola is brought down and together beneath it. The nipples and areolas remain attached to underlying mounds of tissue, which will allow no loss of sensation to occur and the ability to breast-feed.

Breast lifts should last and remain constant, but significant weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and aging can affect the shape of the breasts. Some patients will have another breast lift as aging occurs. Incisions from the surgery heal and fade over time. The incision lines eventually become faint lines, but the appearance of the lines vary. Find out if you may be a good candidate for a breast lift.
