Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is performed on the facial skin to remove acne scarring, chicken pox scarring, or any other type of facial scarring.  During dermabrasion, the surgeon freezes the patient’s skin and sands down the skin to improve the contour and to achieve a more lively appearance with a new layer of remodeled skin to replace the damaged skin.  The surgeon scrapes away the outer layer of skin using a rough wire brush that contains diamond particles.  The dermabrasion tool has a motorized handle that continues to scrape the skin until the surgeon has reached the safest level.  Although not all the scarring will be removed, dermabrasion can greatly improved the appearance of the skin.

Dermabrasion is generally safe but risk of a change in skin pigmentation is possible.  The dermabrasion surgery is a pretty quick procedure that can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on the size of the area being treated.  Pinkness of the skin following the dermabrasion will fade in about three months.  The skin treated will eventually become fully repigmented and the color will match the surrounding skin.
