Facial implants are designed for reconstructive, augmentative, or rejuvenative purposes, and are available in all sizes and styles for the chin, jaw, nose, and cheek. They can proportion the face by adding or restoring contour that can be aesthetically pleasing. Usually a facial implant is performed on an outpatient basis, and the results are permanent. Within one week after a facial implants, normal activities can be resumed. Different types of facial implants are very similar in technique to perform. A surgeon will make a small incision where the implant will be put, in a crease or inside the mouth at the gum and lip junction. After a pocket is made in the facial tissue, the implant is inserted and the incision is stitched up. General anesthesia is used for this 1-2 hour process. The stitches are removed in 5-10 days and the sutures placed inside the mouth will dissolve within the same time. Some patients will combine a facial implant with another type of cosmetic surgery, like a facelift or a nose or eyelid procedure. Like any surgical procedure, infection can occur with a facial implant. It is possible for the implant to shift in which a second procedure may be necessary to reposition it. Bruising and swelling, along with mild to moderate discomfort is likely to follow the operation for 1-2 days. Rough and strenuous activity around the operated areas should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. |
