How does a physician become a plastic surgeon?

After a high number of complications were reported to occur with plastic surgery a focus on safety was made. It is essential to choose a surgeon that has become board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In order to do this, a physician must complete a specialized post-graduate training course of five to seven years. Background training usually includes a thorough grounding in general surgery however a background in ENT or orthopedics may be acceptable. The final two to three years of training must be in an approved plastic surgery training center. Prior to official certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery the physician must pass a rigorous set of both written and oral examinations.

What are some good questions to ask a plastic surgeon before selecting one?

By bringing a checklist of questions the patient can better ensure the safety and quality of the plastic surgery procedure. Some good questions to ask are:

  • Are you certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
  • Do you have hospital privileges to perform this surgery?
  • How many of this type of procedure have you performed?
  • What are the risks involved with the procedure?
  • What is the expected recovery time for this procedure?
  • What is your policy on surgical revisions?
  • How much will the surgery cost and what will this include?
