Forehead
Lift
Forehead
lifts can improve sagging or low position of the eyebrows that create
a tired or sad appearance, deep horizontal creases across the forehead,
or frown lines or furrows between the eyebrows and sometimes across
the top of your nose. There are different techniques to elevate
the brows and correct aging changes in the forehead area. After
a personal consultation with a plastic surgeon these techniques
will be evaluated to best fit your needs.
During
a personal consultation you can discuss your end-result goals with
the plastic surgeon so that he can fully understand what you would
like to achieve with a forehead lift. Your entire forehead and
upper eyelid region will be closely examined. Muscle activity and
positioning of your eyebrows will be factored.
Incisions
are made at the top of the scalp, beginning above the ears and hidden
within the hair during most forehead lifts. An incision will be
made at the front of the hairline or toward the middle of the scalp
in some instances. Incisions are designed to heal and appear inconspicuous.
Part of the muscle can be modified or removed through the forehead
lift incision that is the cause of wrinkling and frown lines. Through
the same incision, excess skin is removed and your eyebrows can
be lifted to a more pleasing level.
A different
forehead lift technique uses an instrument called an endoscope,
a long, thin tube with a light on the end that is attached to a
video camera. The endoscope is inserted through several tiny incisions
that are made in the scalp. This allows the plastic surgeon to
see and work on various internal structures of the forehead. Advantages
of using the endoscopic technique for a forehead lift is that minimal
incisions are required, though it is not beneficial to all patients.
Combination of different techniques can also be used for forehead
lifts, depending on the patient and the results desired.
Right
after surgery you will experience mild discomfort and must rest
with your head elevated. Temporary puffiness and discoloration
can involve the eyelid and cheek areas. Swelling and bruising will
usually go down in within a couple weeks. Normal activities can
resume within ten days or less. Several weeks should be factored
in before you can expect to see the final results of your forehead
lift. The results of the forehead lift last a long time depending
on your heredity and lifestyle factors. Some people may choose
to get touch ups or additional forehead lifts later in life.
Forehead
lifts involve risks and complications. Hematoma, an accumulation
of blood under the skin and infection and reactions to anesthesia
can occur. All surgical procedures carry risks, and your plastic
surgeon can discuss what should be done to reduce these risks.
Follow up care should be made with your plastic surgeon following
the forehead lift.
