Hair loss affects many American men and women. Over the years there have been many options to battle hair loss. Hair transplantation is a technique that has replaced the former options, such as plugs. Hair transplantation is a permanent procedure that requires no further surgery once it has been completed. The transplantation works by starting with a local anesthesia in most micro-hair transplant procedures (individual hair micro-graft restorations). This type of transplantation is an outpatient procedure. Flap surgery, another type of hair transplantation, requires a general anesthesia and is carried through in a surgical setting. The transplanted hair falls out in about six weeks, in which it will have to be replaced about three months later when the new hair grows in. Several sessions are usually required to reach a desired density. Hair transplantation requires hundreds of micro-grafts that each contain about one to three hairs mini-grafted from a site on the side or back of the head. In order to get hair transplantation the patient must first have an adequate amount of hair in the donor areas. For patients with larger bald areas hair transplantation can be combined with other procedures. They are then randomly implanted in the bald or thinning area so they can grow in a natural pattern. This can restore a natural and younger look that the patient may be wishing to restore. Hair transplantation is more affordable of a hair-loss treatment over time, though it is a time consuming process that can require multiple sessions over a year or two. There can be discomfort, bruising, and swelling as a result of hair transplantation and numbness around the donor or recipient site that usually subsides within one to two months. There is a several day recovery time before regular routines can be resumed. Individual hair characteristics should be considered as it can affect the density of transplanted hair. Transplanted hair survival is also unpredictable. |
