Lip
Augmentation
Lip
augmentation is used to create fuller looking lips, with more “kissable”
area and to reduce wrinkles that have formed around the mouth.
Collagen injections or transferred fat from other areas of the patient’s
body are the two different ways lip augmentation is carried through.
Repeat treatment is necessary to maintain the results of lip augmentation
with both liquid collagen and fat because both treatments become
absorbed. Collagen usually lasts about 9-12 weeks, and while fat
injections may last longer, they are more unpredictable to improvement
and can have lumping or scarring effects. Another option for a
longer lasting result includes AlloDerm and SoftForm, which are
implanted materials.
Natural
or synthetic biocompatible material is injected or implanted in
the lips, unless the patient’s fat is used. The injections may
have to be repeated periodically, though each visit usually only
requires one injection. The longer lasting lip augmentation procedures,
like AlloDerm, is inserted through tiny incisions inside the corners
of the mouth made from a natural collagen sheet made from donated
skin. The AlloDerm implant becomes integrated with the natural
tissues. The lip augmentation choice, called laser lip rejuvenation
tightens the natural collagen and elastic tissue beneath the lips.
There are other synthetic lip augmentation options that include
the SoftForm and soft ePTFE, but also:
- Autologen—dermal
implant material made from the patient’s own skin is injected
- Dermalogen—Human Tissue Matrix (HTM) procured from donor tissue
is injected
- Fascia—donor tissue made from the dense white connective tissue
that supports body structure is either injected or surgically implanted
- HylaForm—donor tissue made up of a molecular component of the
human body is injected
- Restylane—crystal-clear gel is injected and the hylauronic acid
found in this type of lip augmentation is very close to what is
naturally found in the body
The non-surgical forms of lip augmentation allows the patient to
immediately resume their normal activities. For surgical lip augmentations
a recovery period of about one week is required. Allergic reactions
may occur, including swelling or itching, a prolonged redness, or
firmness at the injection site. Lip augmentation can also cause
bleeding, lip asymmetry, and migration and extrusion of the implant.
There is no swelling and bruising associated to the procedure that
lasts from 3-7 days.
The
AlloDerm and Dermalogen options are not rejected by the body because
they are human tissue and do not require the patient to provide
the donor tissue. Gore-Tex implants are a permanent option for
lip augmentation that is easily inserted and well tolerated by the
body. For patients who are “experimenting” with lip augmentation
the Gore-Tex procedure may not be the best option. Collagen and
fat injection is not a permanent procedure that can be beneficial
to someone who wants to try out a fuller lip.
Patients
who have reactions to the pre-treatment collagen skin test, patients
with serious allergy history, or patients who are allergic to lidocaine
should not consider lip augmentation. Patients who have an active
inflammatory skin condition or infections may need to postpone lip
augmentation. It is possible for a soft-form to become infected
or be rejected because it is a foreign body.
